« The Brown Symposium brings to the Southwestern University persons of national and international reputation in areas represented by the holders of endowed Brown professorships. Distinct from the traditional lecture series, these symposia are integrated into the regular curriculum of our university, as well as, attended by a large lay audience.

Previous topics for the Brown Symposium have included cosmology, punctuated evolution, macro-history, the human genome project, spiritualities of resistance, arctic ecology, and the intersection of science and religion. Previous speakers have included Nancy Wexler, Michael Brown, Paul Berg, Winona LaDuke, Isaac Asimov, Stephen J. Gould, Donald Johanson, William McNeill, Diane Ackerman, Alex Haley, and Kenneth Boulding, amongst others.

The title of the 2015 Brown Symposium is  “3D Printing and the Arts: What Things May Come”.  Topics will focus on the impact of 3D technology on the human mind as it endeavors to meet future challenges in the arts and sciences. Sculpture has been involved in 3D printing from its very beginning.   We will explore what things may come from 3D Printing technology in the Fine Arts and Sciences; how it will not only impact our lives but also open up our minds. The symposium will include an international sculpture exhibition of 3D digitally designed and printed works along with lectures, panel discussions and videos that demonstrate what remarkable things may come, which will change our lives now and in the future.

The dates for the exhibition are February 4, to March 5th, 2015 to be held in the Fine Arts Gallery at the Sarofim School of Fine Arts of Southwestern University. The opening reception is held on February 26th at 4:30 in the Gallery in conjunction with the Brown Symposium on "3D printing and the Arts: What Things May Come". »
