Scott Van Note is a graduate student of fine arts at Arizona State University and the “Systems Tech” (3D scanners, 3D printers, PCs, and network) for the rapid prototyping lab on campus. A self-proclaimed aversion to the purely virtual has led to him to develop accessible computer based processes to create sculptures in the material world. His current work explores the ability of the computer to create organic shell-like shapes from mathematical algorithms and the organic-like degradation of that perfection through the many manual operations used to wrest the virtual data into the actual world.


Description

Illuminated Algorithm is an expansion of the idea "R=exp(theta)".
Take this short mathematical formula for two dimensional exponential spirals, pull it into the three dimensional world that we live in, scale it and skew it with simple mathematics and it starts looking like familiar organic forms.
Rams horns, clamshells, antelope horns, snailshells, etc.

This particular shell-like shape combines the pure symmetry of the exponential spiral form and a mathematical, though symmetry disturbing, terracing of the surface. The effect is emphasized by the way the light travels through and reflects off of the entire sculpture. An effect that compels one to move around the shape to experience the entire surface.

This form is meant to be produced using the SLA process.
The wall thickness is such that it will scale quite small and still be buildable.
Would prefer it built as large as possible, assuming ~11" is maximum in SLA.
